Business Writing That Gets Read course cover

Good work gets lost when the message is written in the order the work happened.

01

The request is at the end

Background first, findings next, the ask in the last paragraph. A reader on a phone between meetings stops before reaching what you need.

02

The reader has to dig

Long paragraphs, vague subject lines and no headings make a scanning reader work to find the point, so the reply waits or never comes.

03

The tone lands wrong

A short, efficient message can read as curt, and a careful one as unsure. In writing the reader cannot hear your voice, so they guess.

Learning outcomes

What you will be able to do

Eight practical outcomes, each practiced in an exercise and checked in the final assessment or the capstone.

  1. Explain why busy readers miss or misread workplace messages, using the curse of knowledge, research on email tone and the principles of writing for busy readers.
  2. Analyze your reader and purpose with the Reader Snapshot and state your message in a Point Sentence.
  3. Structure messages for scanning readers: bottom line first, descriptive headings and lists, and a complete Action Line.
  4. Write concise, plain sentences and check readability and accessibility.
  5. Manage tone, unwelcome news, corrections and inclusive language in writing.
  6. Write effective emails, status updates and short proposals.
  7. Edit in passes, proofread with the Last Look and use AI writing tools with verification and accountability.
  8. Build a personal writing system and produce a professional writing portfolio.

The Camderson method

Teaching tools for messages that get read

The Reader Snapshot and the Point Sentence

Who · Knows · Cares about · Next action · Your point in about 25 words

Before you draft, picture the person reading and decide the one thing they need to know or do, stated so it can stand alone.

The Skim Test and the Action Line

Subject · First two lines · Headings · Bold text · Who, what, by when, how to respond

Check that a reader who only skims still gets the point, and end with a next step nobody has to guess.

The Cut Pass and the Tone Read

Sections · Sentences · Padded phrases · Hedges · Opening, reason, words, audience, close

Cut what the reader does not need, then read the message the way the reader will, so it sounds the way you mean it.

The Three-Pass Edit and the Last Look

Structure · Sentences · Surface · Names, numbers, dates, links, recipients

Edit in passes instead of all at once, then make one final check of the details that cause the most trouble when they are wrong.

Your point first. Their next step clear.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a good writer already?

No. The course assumes no writing training. It starts from how busy readers read and gives you simple tools for each step: who you are writing for, what your point is, how to structure it and how to edit it.

Is this only for email?

No. Email is the most common example, and the same tools carry over to status updates, short proposals and recommendations, chat messages and documents. Module 5 covers emails, status updates and short proposals one at a time.

How long do I have access?

Your access does not expire. We review the course regularly, and any updates are added for you at no extra cost.

How long does it take?

About 5 hours in total, including the written lessons and their videos, the Try it exercises, the knowledge checks, the final assessment and the capstone. Everything is self-paced.

Do I have to use my own messages?

No. Practice Drafts and Model Rewrites are included for every technique, and you can complete the capstone for Saltgrass Veterinary Clinic, a fictional business with a brief. If you use your own work, remove names, account or phone numbers and anything confidential, and follow your organization's policy before sharing internal documents.

Does the course cover AI writing tools?

Briefly. Lesson 6.2 shows how to check anything an AI tool adds or changes before you send it, and who stays accountable for the message. The course teaches the human craft of writing; CA-AI-019 AI Writing and Editing for Professional Documents covers AI tools in depth.

Is the certificate accredited, or does it carry professional credit?

Neither. You receive a Camderson Academy Certificate of Completion after passing the final assessment and the capstone, a writing portfolio that a person reviews. It is not an academic credential and does not carry continuing education, continuing professional education (CPE) or other professional credit.

Is there a money-back guarantee?

Yes. You are covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee. If the course is not right for you, email connect@camderson.com within 30 days of purchase and we will refund you in full. No questions asked. Your course access ends when the refund is issued.

What tools do I need?

A word processor that opens .docx files, a spreadsheet program that opens .xlsx files (Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers or LibreOffice Calc) and a PDF reader. All templates and practice files are included as downloads.

Your point first. Their next step clear.

Self-paced, about 5 hours, with a Workbook, Practice Drafts, Model Rewrites, 16 Writing Templates and a one-page Quick Reference to help you picture your reader, put your point at the top, make the next step easy, cut what is not needed and check every message before you send it.
