Starting a Business: From Idea to First Customer course cover

It is easy to build a business before anyone asks a customer.

01

Compliments mistaken for evidence

Friends and family say "Great idea!" and mean it kindly. But praise costs them nothing, and it says little about whether a stranger will pay.

02

Money spent before learning

Equipment, a logo, a website or a lease come first, and the first real customer conversation comes last, when changing course is most expensive.

03

Setup and pricing by guesswork

A price copied from a competitor, a structure chosen from an online ad, and taxes left for later can turn a good idea into a stressful one.

Learning outcomes

What you will be able to do

Eight practical outcomes, each practiced in an exercise and checked in the final assessment or the capstone.

  1. Explain an evidence-first approach to starting a business and assess your own skills, time, money, network and limits, including what you can afford to lose.
  2. Turn an idea into a clear problem statement with testable assumptions, and choose a specific first customer segment.
  3. Research a market, its competitors and customers' current alternatives using free, reliable public data and local help.
  4. Plan, run and interpret customer conversations that produce honest evidence, and decide whether to persevere, refine or pivot.
  5. Define a value proposition, a first offer and a one-page business model.
  6. Set a first price using three anchors and estimate startup costs, break-even and personal runway.
  7. Describe the main U.S. setup steps (structure, name and registration, EIN, licenses and permits, insurance, banking, records and taxes) and know when to consult a licensed attorney or CPA.
  8. Find, approach and win a first paying customer honestly and within basic marketing rules, then deliver, learn and plan your first 90 days.

The Camderson method

Four teaching tools for testing an idea and making your first sale

The Evidence Ladder

Compliments · Stated interest · Past behavior · Commitments · Money

Five rungs from the weakest evidence to the strongest. Score every conversation at the highest rung the person actually reached, and decide from what people did, not what they said they might do.

The Idea Snapshot

Who has the problem · The problem · How they handle it today · Why now · Your idea · Riskiest assumptions

Your idea written as guesses you can test, with the least certain and most important assumptions first, then rewritten from what customers said and did.

The Offer One-Pager

For · Problem · What you get · Result · Price · How it works · Next step

One page that describes the smallest real offer a customer could buy this month, in the customer's own words, with no claims you cannot back up.

The Three Price Anchors

Floor · Market · Value

Your costs including your time, what customers pay for alternatives, and what the result is worth to them. Your first price sits above the floor, informed by the market and below the value.

Evidence before building.

Curriculum

Inside the course

Seven modules, 20 lessons with worked examples and video

01

Start Smart

Why testing beats building first, what the survival data does and does not say, your Founder Fit Sheet with what you can afford to lose, starting on the side, and an Idea Snapshot with your riskiest assumptions.

02

Know Your Customer and Market

Choosing a specific first customer segment, finding free and reliable public data and local help, a bottom-up estimate, and the competitors and alternatives customers already use, including doing nothing.

03

Talk to Customers Before You Build

Planning honest conversations, asking about past specifics instead of opinions about the future, and scoring what you hear on the Evidence Ladder to persevere, refine or pivot.

04

Define Your Offer

A value proposition in your customers' words, the smallest real offer you can sell this month on an Offer One-Pager, and your business model on one page.

05

Price It and Check the Numbers

The Three Price Anchors, testing price without guessing, startup and monthly costs, contribution, break-even, payback and runway within your affordable loss.

06

Set Up Your Business the Right Way

Business structures, name, registration, EIN, licenses and permits, insurance, a business bank account, simple records and taxes, with the questions to bring to an attorney and a CPA.

07

Win and Serve Your First Customer

Warm, referred and new prospects, outreach that follows the email rules, making the ask and putting it in writing, then delivering, learning and planning your first 90 days.

Is this course right for you?

This course is for you if

  • You have a business idea you have not tested yet, and you want to know whether real customers will pay before you spend serious money
  • You want to start on the side while keeping your job, or turn a skill you already have into a service business
  • You have no business training and want plain-English steps from idea to first paying customer

It is not the right fit if

  • You need a full business plan for a lender or investor (CA-BE-002 covers that; this course ends with a one-page plan for you, the founder)
  • You want legal, tax or financial advice for your specific situation (this course is general education and shows you what to ask a licensed attorney and a CPA)
  • You are raising venture capital for a high-growth startup (the examples here favor small service and product businesses one person can start)
