Business Operations & SOP Development course cover

When the process lives in one person's head, the business pays for it.

01

Results depend on who is working

The same job gets done three different ways, so quality, timing and cost swing from one person or one day to the next.

02

Knowledge walks out the door

When the one person who knows the steps is out, sick or gone, work stalls and everyone else guesses.

03

The same problems keep coming back

Without a written, current way of doing the work, mistakes get fixed one at a time and nothing changes for next time.

Learning outcomes

What you will be able to do

Eight practical outcomes, each practiced in an exercise and checked in the final assessment or the capstone.

  1. Explain why undocumented processes create variation, key-person risk and rework, and what a good SOP does and does not do.
  2. Build a Process Inventory and choose what to document first with the SOP Priority Score.
  3. Scope a process with a SIPOC and Start and Stop Lines, map it in swimlanes and find handoffs, waits and failure points with a Map Walk.
  4. Write SOPs and checklists people use: choose the format, write steps that pass the Step Test and build Follow-along and Confirm checklists.
  5. Assign ownership with a RACI chart that passes the RACI Check, name process owners, write Handoff Agreements and train people with Show-Do-Check.
  6. Control SOPs with an SOP Register and measure processes with a Process Scorecard of outcome, process and balancing measures.
  7. Handle deviations with a Deviation Log and Five Whys, and improve processes with small Plan-Do-Study-Act tests.
  8. Keep SOPs current with change requests and review cycles, use AI drafting tools with verification and assemble an Operations Manual starter.

The Camderson method

Teaching tools for processes that run without you

The Process Inventory and the SOP Priority Score

Frequency · Risk · Variation · Pain · Scored 1 to 5 each, out of 20

List every recurring process, then score each one so you document the work that matters most first.

The SIPOC, the Swimlane Map and the Map Walk

Start and Stop Lines · Suppliers to customers · One lane per role · Waits and failure points

See how the work really flows, with the people who do it, before you write a single step.

The Step Test and the SOP Standard

One action · Starts with a verb · Clear who · Observable result · Key point and reason

Write steps anyone can follow, in one standard format, with checklists for the work that cannot be missed.

RACI, Show-Do-Check and the Process Scorecard

One accountable owner · Show · Do · Check · Outcome, process and balancing measures

Make ownership clear, train people on the SOP, then measure whether the process works and improve it with small tests.

Write it down. Name an owner. Keep improving it.

Is this course right for you?

This course is for you if

  • You run or manage operations in a small or mid-sized business and work depends on a few people who know how things get done
  • Mistakes, rework or delays keep coming back, and you want written processes people will actually use
  • You want a repeatable way to inventory, map, write, assign, measure and improve processes, with templates you can reuse

It is not the right fit if

  • You want a deep course on lean methods and waste reduction (later Camderson Academy courses cover process improvement in depth)
  • You want to choose KPIs and build performance dashboards (this course teaches a four-measure Scorecard for one process)
  • You need a regulated quality system or legal, safety, HR or compliance review of a specific procedure (the course points you to the people responsible)

Frequently asked questions

Do I need process or operations training already?

No. The course assumes no process training. It starts from the work your team does today and gives you simple tools for each step: take inventory, map, write, assign, measure and improve.

Is this only for big or formal organizations?

No. The examples and templates are written for small and mid-sized businesses, including services, trades, distribution, retail, clinics, agencies and offices. You can use the tools on one process or a whole business.

How long do I have access?

Your access does not expire. We review the course regularly, and any updates are added for you at no extra cost.

How long does it take?

About 7 hours in total, including the written lessons and their videos, the Try it exercises, the knowledge checks, the final assessment and the capstone. Everything is self-paced.

Do I have to use my own business?

No. A Practice Pack and Model Answers are included for every technique, and you can complete the capstone for Fennimore Pool & Spa Service, a fictional business with a brief. If you use your own work, remove names, account numbers and anything confidential, and follow your organization's policy before sharing internal documents.

Does the course cover AI tools?

Briefly. Lesson 6.2 shows how to use AI tools to draft and update SOPs and how to verify everything before you put it into use, including what information not to paste into a tool. The course teaches the process craft; AI tools are one optional helper.

Is the certificate accredited, or does it carry professional credit?

Neither. You receive a Camderson Academy Certificate of Completion after passing the final assessment and the capstone, an SOP Starter Kit that a person reviews. It is not an academic credential and does not carry continuing education, continuing professional education (CPE) or other professional credit.

Is there a money-back guarantee?

Yes. You are covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee. If the course is not right for you, email connect@camderson.com within 30 days of purchase and we will refund you in full. No questions asked. Your course access ends when the refund is issued.

What tools do I need?

A word processor that opens .docx files, a spreadsheet program that opens .xlsx files (Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers or LibreOffice Calc) and a PDF reader. All templates and practice files are included as downloads.

Write it down. Name an owner. Keep improving it.

This course earns a Camderson Academy Certificate of Completion. It is not an academic credential, it is not accredited, and it does not carry continuing education (CEU), continuing professional education (CPE) or other professional credit. This course is general education about business operations and process documentation. It is not legal, safety, HR or compliance advice. Regulated work, such as food, drugs, transportation, health care and workplace safety, has its own legal requirements for written procedures, training and records. Follow those rules and your organization's policies, and check with the people responsible for safety and compliance before you put an SOP into use.
